Do you really need a truck this big?

I've noticed most people who drive these things drive like raging assholes.  Not surprising.

#micropoetry "Subway redux"

Sitting in a Subway after eating too much processed food.
It is the dark underbelly of food we don't want to know about.
It was only fitting Jared Fogle was their spokesmen for so long until his darkness saw the light of day.
Knowing what I know and don't know, why do I keep eating here?
Knowing what we know and don't know about the world how do any of us stand it?

#micropoetry "Twitter is fickle"

It gives quickly and takes away even faster.
No one knows how it works.
But I watch my follower numbers
and my retweets
and general interactions.

Why do I do this?
Hardly (or maybe)
unless you want to quantify relevance.

#micropoetry "Sunglasses"

Sunglasses belong on your face
not behind your neck for this
is the telltale sign of a douche.

Other signs of being a douche are
pastel pants,
dress shoes with buckles,
bow ties and
loafers without socks.

This applies to a preppy douche.

It is important to record your thoughts in notebooks--I prefer #moleskine

It is important to write down your thoughts.  Writing (the physical act itself) helps you think better.  I like to view it as unlocking doors into my mind.  It certainly helps with creative writing.  This is why I suggest carrying a moleskine notebook where ever you go.

Is there an etiquette to #LinkedIn?

Yes there is, but it isn't always very clear.  The old saying goes: "Don't talk about religion and politics."  I try not to talk about religion, but I sometimes talk about politics.  So do my friends on LinkIn and in other social media outlets.  And we don't often agree.  That's fine with me.  I respect people having different opinions, but what I cannot abide is when people rebuke me for stating an opinion.  "LinkedIn isn't a a place for that" kind of statements offend me.

#poetry "Expansion"

People and objects vary when viewed from different angles.
Time and distance distort all shapes.
The more time that passes the farther apart we all are.
Except for you.
We grow closer even as our universe expands.

How should lawyers go about #marketing their practices?

Marketing relates to everything you do because all of your actions create an "image" to the public. Ultimately it is about making that image sell, and this means getting clients.  More specifically, it means getting paid.  In spite of all the benefits of technology, nothing beats relationships forged through meeting people and getting to know them on a substantive level.  The best referrals I've ever had have been through friends and colleagues I know personally.

You cannot discount the power of social media.  I have over 4,000 Twitter followers, a few thousand LinkedIn contacts, a few thousand Facebook friends, and while not exactly social media, my blog gets between 300-700 page views a day.  So, for better or for worse, this gets my name out there.

The take away: 1) cultivate relationships and 2) maintain a presence on social media.

Later today I'm launching my monthly #SocialSecurityDisability newsletter with news and tips about #disability cases

Please forgive the hashtags, but that draws more of you to my blog and to the information.  I hope that information will be helpful to you.  It is more of a local effort as it will be sent to lawyers in the Triad area (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point), but I don't restrict myself to those areas as I've handled cases all over the state.

#poetry "Truth in Moleskine"

I search for the truth in a moleskine.
Words try and find a place to speak
and say something.
Sometimes I fail them,
and sometimes they fail me.
But we try.
And trying is the truth
discovered and revealed
in my moleskine.

Because what I say matters
and I will unleash my truth
from the moorings in my head.
To go find their beauty
which is often elusive.
But always there.

Outside my window.

#poetry "Legos are fun at any age"

Legos are fun at any age.
They remind us things are built in stages.
Life is made up of building blocks.

Moments stacked upon each other
create our lives and
make it something worth seeing
and remembering.

Editing #amwriting

I've been reading through my editor's edits and going back and creating a more current outline.  This will allow me to see what holes are in my plot and inconsistencies I have in my narrative.  Likewise, it will allow me to determine where I insert new plot points to enhance my narrative and to move the plot.

Glad to see #Alana and #Marko reunited in #Saga

I've really gotten into comics and graphic novels thanks to my lovely wife.  In Saga #30, Marko and Alana found each other.

#Aquaman gets philosophical

#poetry "Blurry ahead, blurry behind"

There's no point explaining it
because we don't know what it is.
By the time we understand
we won't remember what we understood.

The path of existence is a foggy road
where we can't see ahead
and what is behind is blurry.
We can see where we are now
and that will soon be a muddled memory.

We clearly saw Pluto for the first time this week.
We could barely see it before.
Pluto was a planet.
Now that we can see it it isn't.
Downgraded but not diminished by man because it will be there long after we are gone.
And it was there long before us.

#lastfrontier for the crazy

And now they are here.

#poetry "Pluto"

Pluto does exist.
Some of you doubt that.
Like you doubt evolution.
And men walking on the moon.
And nanotechnology.
And climate change.
And anything you can't understand
Which is virtually everything.

But you do believe in God
Even though he or she
Can't actually be proven.

#SocialSecurity overpaid me, but do I still have to pay them back? #SSA

Probably.  SSA screws up all the time and overpays people on retirement and disability cases.  What is an "over payment"?  An over payment occurs when SSA pays you more money than you are legally entitled to receive.  SSA makes these mistakes all the time, and their making mistakes doesn't mean you get to skate on paying them back.  You likely still have to pay them back when they request the money.  It is harsh, but that's the law.

#poetry "If you are 'sick,' you are unlikely sick"

If you are sick, you aren't likely sick.
There are other things you would rather do.
Wouldn't we all?

"I have excuses," you say:
"Idon't feel well (I'm hungover).
Someone died (I'm using a death to stay out).
My house has problems (I don't have a better excuse).
I have a vacation (No excuses at all)."

Excuses are rarely explanations.
They are unavailing reasons.
And we wonder why the Asian countries are getting ahead.

#Aquaman...great for maritime law

Thus begins another busy work week.  There is always so much to do.  I am fortunate to have a very healthy client base, which I have assiduously cultivated over the years.  The bulk of my cases are Social Security disability cases, and I am fortunate to have many great referral sources.  Satisfied clients refer other clients to me.  Non-profits refer clients to me (I am fortunate to have many non-profits for which I handle cases.)  And lawyers refer cases to me.

My #MondayMotivation is to continue to provide excellent legal representation to my clients but to understand even better their struggles.  If I do, I will be an even better lawyer.  Empathy is important.

#poetry "Monday"

A fat woman set off my car alarm
on a Monday.
It scared her.
I laughed.
Life is funny sometimes.

Loving #FindersKeepers

#poetry "Literary Moment"

I stood in line at a sad convenience store
on a hazy summer day.
Black men, Hispanic men and white men were buying alcohol.
"Sympathy for the Devil" seemed to narrate the moment.

I bought a Red Bull.
Caffeine takes you up.
Alcohol takes you down,
but both take you away or
move you to another place,
a different state.

None of us are immune from mean forces.
Some of us are shielded better from them.
But we must recognize them,
And give them credit.

Our ability to suffer and feel pain makes us human.
All of us that day lived different lives,
but we are still the same.
Each feels pain.
And all the other 'Seven Deadly Sins.'
So the Devil is in all of us,
And we should recognize that.

#micropoetry "The Woman Who Loves Me"

All I need is the woman who loves me.
She nourishes my soul with a glance.

Maybe nothing else matters
because everything else is an offshoot of that beautiful truth.
No blind quest is necessary because the secret of the universe is the center of mine.

It is all about love.
All else takes care of itself.

#TrudyWade and #JohnHardister sell out #Greensboro

The General Assembly is rotten, but Senator Trudy Wade and Representative John Hardister sold out Greensboro.  They stripped power from Mayor Nancy Vaughn (reducing her to being able to vote only when the city council has a tie), and they placed the four African American city council members into two districts.  Greensboro voters didn't ask for this slimy legislation.  Reprehensible.

How much can you earn and still receive SSDI? #SocialSecurityDisability

According to the SSA website (, you can earn up to $1,040 per month and still receive Social Security disability.  Anything below this amount is not deemed "substantial gainful activity."  SSA lets you work so long as your work is not substantial gainful activity.  In other words, you can work some, but you can't work much.  Anything $1,040 or more per month is too much.
