State bars battle lawyer depression; legal profession ranks fourth in suicide rate
State bars battle lawyer depression; legal profession ranks fourth in suicide rate. I 've heard this statistic before. It was mentioned at the NCBA (www.ncba.org) board of governors meeting yesterday. Many lawyers suffer from depression and other mental health issues. Often these issues exist prior to becoming a lawyer, and, after becoming a lawyer, the long hours and stress of the job only exacerbate these issues. When you throw in substance abuse issues, it gets even worse. It's a shame.
